International Students Make an Annual Economic Contribution of £28.8 Billion to the UK, a New Report Finds

According to a recent study by Universities UK International (UUKi) and the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI), international students in the UK contribute £28.8 billion to the country’s economy each year.

The number of international students at UK higher education institutions has been impacted by COVID-19 and changes in tuition fees for EU students as a result of Brexit, according to a report titled “The costs and benefits of international higher education students to the UK” with research from London Economics.According to data, there were 56% less EU students admitted to undergraduate degree program in early August 2021 than in the same period previous year

The paper claims that the advantages of accepting overseas students outweigh their expenses, which include the usage of public services, which the analysis estimates to be worth £2.9 billion.

  • £261 million Nottingham South
  • £243 million for Holborn and St. Pancras
  • £240 million Newcastle upon Tyne East
  • East Ham: £217,000,000
  • £214 million for Cambridge
  • £181 million Cardiff Central
  • £171 million spent on Glasgow Central

International students, according to Nick Hillman, director of HEPI, not only benefit the UK economically but also increase campus diversity. To maximize these advantages, Hillman added, “we must extend a cordial welcome, make sure our educational programme is still competitive, and assist overseas students in finding rewarding professions after graduation.”

The report, according to Vivienne Stern, Director of Universities UK Overseas, is a “stark reminder” of the value of international students to UK communities financially.
